We visited early April to have afternoon tea, we were in Cellardyke in Fife and wanted somewhere that felt comfortable since we have two young children, and was struggling to find somewhere, then saw the cakes made here and knew it was the place for us! it was just under an hour's drive from our holiday cottage but well worth it! We weren't sure if a two person afternoon tea would be enough with our children and were given the option to do a three person one, which we did. We could've definitely managed with the two person one as the portions were generous and so tasty! We were given options for hot drinks, my husband had tea and I had got chocolate which was huge and arrived with lots of cream and marshmallows topped with a marshmallow daisy. I ran out of room very quickly (my husband managed more!), so when we were all done we were offered boxes to take away our remaining cakes. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were so friendly! The cafe was clean and tidy and it was an added bonus that not only does it have a toilet, but there is a baby change as well. We will definitely return if we holiday in Fife again.
We have lunch here every Friday. Always excellent. Always excellent service. Wide range of food. Excellent range of cakes. Just in case I forgot to say, it's excellent It really feels like we're eating with family
Merchants House Cafe is an absolute treasure. Housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century building, it blends historic charm with modern comfort. The coffee is consistently excellent, and the home baking is some of the best you’ll find—fresh, generous, and clearly made with care. Vegan and dietary-friendly options are clearly marked and genuinely tasty (not an afterthought like in some places). The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff are always friendly—it’s the kind of place where you feel looked after, not just served. Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee, a relaxing brunch, or treating yourself to a slice of cake in the courtyard, it always delivers. Yes, it can get busy at peak times, but that just proves how good it is. Highly recommended to locals and visitors alike—this is Kirkcaldy at its best.
Came this morning for breakfast with my partner and 7 month old. Cafe was brilliant, very clean and we were lucky to sit in the back garden area which looked amazing and also very clean. Not crowded with tables, will say it was just right. Sitting there and looking at the surroundings it feels like you are on holiday and not in Kirkcaldy. Food wise, everything was perfect, we ordered at kettle of tea, chai Latte, Vegan Hotdog, Merchants Special (soft cheese and smoked salmon in a Panini), Pineapple Torte and Carrot Cake. Everything was fresh and looked amazing. Tasted brilliant and at the end we didn't feel we ove are but we're left very satisfied. Will definitely be back again!!!
Dropped in for a freshly baked fruit scone and cappuccino the display of home baked cakes and sweets is amazing and it would be very easy to work your way through what was on offer No wonder it is a busy cafe . It also has outdoor seating which is handy for dog walkers. Its not cheap but you are paying for quality
I visited the Merchants House Cafe today with a cousin of mine, and it was an exceptional dining experience. A European-style cafe, that is relaxed with a wonderful social atmosphere, clean environment and a superb menu of delicious light meals, baked treats and undeniably professionally baked cheese cake and pies. Their cream cheese is next to none, and we have literally never had better. Absolutely stellar staff, who are friendly and inviting. My cousin mistakenly left her bag in the cafe and one of the members of staff ran to catch us as we were walking a distance along the thoroughfare. They exceeded our expectations and left a lasting impression. 5 stars. We’d give six stars if possible. Highly recommend.
Stopped here for late lunch whilst doing the Fife Costal walk. A gem of a find - located just at the end of the beach on the high st - so easy to find plus open on a Sunday. Staff were great and the courtyard garden (where we had to sit because of the dog) was actually really nice (& would be glorious on a sunny day). Their ‘hero’ dish - the polish sausage with all the trimmings - was perfect. Coffee good. And the range of cakes on offer was eye boggling - bright colours and lots of cream . Well worth a visit if you’re in the area - fantastic value too.
We really love this cafe and didn't realise until today what a lovely garden there is. Delicious food, great coffee and fab cakes, served with a smile, even up the stairs into the garden. What a lovely place!
